What is general supervision for health coaching?
Short answer
The service is furnished under the practitioner's overall direction and control, but the practitioner does not need to be physically present. CMS finalized general supervision for coaching instead of the direct supervision it had proposed (rule pp. 380–381).
CMS amended 42 CFR 410.26(b)(5)(iii) to say health coaching services can be furnished under general supervision when provided by auxiliary personnel incident to a practitioner's services. CMS also noted that 24/7 practitioner access is not necessary for coaching.
