Does a CHES® qualify to provide Medicare health coaching?

Answered by Angel Reyes, MCHES®Last verified: November 5, 2026

Short answer

CMS named "National Commission for Health Education Credentialing eligibility for Certified Health Education Specialists" as one pathway in a non-exhaustive list. It does not make a CHES® an independent biller, and eligibility still depends on supervision and organizational policy.

NCHEC itself cautions against making assumptions about individual eligibility or billing arrangements. The CPT language also references completion of a coaching training program, so document coaching-specific training (for example motivational interviewing and behavior-change coursework) alongside your certification.
